Mikola Fedorovich Chaly was born in 1913 in the village Rai-Alexandrovka, in Donetsk region, Ukraine. In 1931-1938 he studied at the Odessa Art School, in 1938-1941 and in 1946-1949 continued his education at the Kharkov Art Institute. From 1949 Chaly taught art at Lvov Institute of Applied and Decorative Art. Professor and Honoured Artist of Ukraine, he regularly participated in town, regional and republican exhibitions. The artist died in the 1990s.
