ON DEMAND WE ISSUE A CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY (money-back-guarantee)

A portrait miniature depicting a woman facing right, wearing a blue dress with white fichu or shawl. A child (son) seated on her lap is clutching at her fichu. The two persons are portrayed in wooded scenery with rose bush to the right and sun setting in the distance. The miniature is clearly signed and dated: "Motelay 1786", which implies it is a work of well-listed French miniaturist Motelay (also Moteley, Motelet).

Besides biographical information provided by Schidlof, Nathalie Lemoine-Bouchard was able to discover the following: "… Le citoyen (citizen) Motelay lived in 1795 in Paris, 25, place Dauphine and, in the same year, exhibited at the Salon de Paris a few portrait miniatures. He is possibly the same Etienne Motelay who is mentioned as "p(eintre). agé 25 ans…natif de Caen, protégé par M. Houdon…" in the registry of students of Ecole de l'Academie of Paris dated 27th of March 1784.
Schidlof writes: "..some of works of Motelay have a warm colouring similar to that of Hall, of whom Motelay was an imitator".
