This beautiful handmade 2 feather blade wand contains smudging feathers consisting of 2 wild turkey feather rounds. The feathers are wrapped with a waxed thread and tapered down together and join within a black leather wrapped handle designed with an overlay of hand cut pieces of soft authentic deer skin leather.

It measures 11 to 14 inches long and 2 1/2 to 3 inches wide at its widest point in the fan. The handle itself measures 2 1/2 to 3 inches long, 1 inch wide and .75 inch thick. The leather tassels average 5 to 7 inches long.

Navajo artist Tom Ashley and his family live on the Navajo reservation out side of Gallup New Mexico. He hand wraps each of these feathers. No two are alike even though they may have the same design.

This wand is handmade with pieces gathered from the earth and recycled in to new spiritual forms for ceremonies and rituals. It should be handled carefully as it is not a byproduct of plastics but rather earth, wood, sand, animals and nature.

In Native American ceremonies certain herbs are burned separate or together as prayers and are said to “cleanse” one's self or certain areas or items. As the herbs are burned and area cleansed, this is referred to as smudging. As the smoke rises from the burning herbs the Native Americans view this as the prayers being sent out to the universe through the spiritual smoke. Feathers from the earth’s animals are used to fan the burn of the herbs and to send the prayers further in to the spiritual world in a ceremony. Animals represent many different symbols for Native Americans and feathers are very spiritual as they are spiritual symbols that help soar in flight not only the Eagle but the Raven and many other spiritual winged animals. To own Native American smudging feathers is an honor and a collectible.

Our smudging feathers are handmade by husband and wife team Kirk Little Bear and Nora Many Trees of the Chippowa tribe and they live and work in Norther Wisconsin. We use all natural turkey, duck and pheasant feathers unless otherwise noted. We also use reproduced painted eagle feathers. We use a natural waxed rope string and leather strips. Our beads are made from either glass or plastic.

Since the dawn of times plants have been our sacred connection to our mother earth. Plants feed, cure, and shelter us; and legends abound of the power of chosen plants to heal and protect the wise. Native traditions relate that wherever sage and cedar are used, no evil influences may enter.

To “smudge” is to purify with smoke from certain sacred herbs. The sacred ritual of purifying with smoke comes from native peoples in both North and South America. In North America the smoke is created by burning sacred herbs such as sage, cedar, sweet grass and juniper. Smoke may be used to purify the body, spirit, pet, home, office and healing rooms, any space or item in your world

Our smudge sticks are 100% natural aromatic botanical. The herbs were gathered in an ecologically sound and respectful way. The plants are not harmed and nothing is wasted. Our bundles are made for you as tools of empowerment! Enjoy!
