This map opens to 17" x 20½" and is titled Life Zones of
Oregon, by Vernon Bailey, Bureau of Biological Survey,
U.S. Department of the Interior. The legend key identifies five life
zones:
- Arctic-Alpine
- Hudsonian
- Canadian
- Transition
- Upper Sonoran
Vernon Bailey was the chief field naturalist for the U.S. Bureau of
Biological
Survey from 1890 to 1933 and the author of
Mammals and Life Zones of Oregon, a study of the
state’s wildlife and ecological regions.
Mt. Bailey, a peak in the southern Oregon Cascades, is named after him
and his wife, the ornithologist Florence Merriam Bailey.
