Original 1940 fold-out color lithographed ecological map of Oregon, printed more than 75 years ago.

This map opens to 17" x 20½" and is titled Life Zones of Oregon, by Vernon Bailey, Bureau of Biological Survey, U.S. Department of the Interior. The legend key identifies five life zones:

  1. Arctic-Alpine

  2. Hudsonian

  3. Canadian

  4. Transition

  5. Upper Sonoran
Vernon Bailey was the chief field naturalist for the U.S. Bureau of Biological Survey from 1890 to 1933 and the author of Mammals and Life Zones of Oregon, a study of the state’s wildlife and ecological regions. Mt. Bailey, a peak in the southern Oregon Cascades, is named after him and his wife, the ornithologist Florence Merriam Bailey.
