Is there backlighting?:

Our Kindle Paperwhites have backlighting. Backlighting can be adjusted as per your desired brightness, and is very subtle, making the Kindle highly readable without any eye strain.

 

What is the difference between the three models?

In honesty, not that much! Paperwhite editions 1 and 2 have the same screen resolution at 212 PPI, whereas Paperwhite 3 has a 300 PPI screen - having owned all three, the difference really is negligible, 

 

The battery life is also highly comparable in all the three models; and there is a marginal improvement in the processing speed with each iteration - you may notice slightly faster page turns in the later models.
