Description
"Hanaikada” is a Japanese word used to express the scene of Sakura (cherry blossom) petals which form a pink bed on the surface of the water. It is likened to a raft made of flower petals. In Japan, the blossoming of the Sakura has long been the symbol of spring. In ancient Japan, it signalled to farmers that it was time to start tending their farms. Because the blossoms are so splendid, yet relatively short, it’s said the Sakura inspired the lifestyle of the Samurai. The beauty of the Sakura is still inspirational to the Japanese people as a whole, and can be said without doubt that the cherry blossom is deeply rooted in Japanese Culture. Since Sakura trees are plentiful in Japan, and as they bloom so magnificently, the beauty can at times be overwhelming. On the other hand, the blossoms also disappear in the blink of an eye in a “Sakura Fubuki” or "Blossom Blizzard", as it is called in Japan. The image of Sakura petals falling and floating away in the river is said to have inspired the Japanese virtue of “letting things go”, an attitude that is emblematic of the upright character of the Samurai. This is why Hanaikada is an often used theme in Kamon, Kimono and Japanese designs. This Hanaikada Koshirae features Fuchi/Kashira with Sakura blossoms floating in water, and the Menuki and Tsuba are arranged to represent Sakura falling onto a raft, just like the righteous character and brilliant yet fleeting life of a Samurai. The blade is made with aluminum/zink alloy. The Hanaikada Koshirae are made one by one in Kyoto, which boasts many famous places for Sakura viewing. Among them is “Hideyoshi Toyotomi’s Daigo” or Daigoji temple which is also a world heritage site. The Iaito also comes with a certificate with the “Kyoto Japan” mark certifying authenticity.
