What is Glucosamine?

It is a natural occurring chemical compound in the body and is often used in joint supplements to relieve joint pain. Your levels fall as you age and this can lead to a slow breakdown of the joint compounds. Glucosamine is important because it contributes to cartilage formation and joint lubrication. Glucosamine Sulfate is taken from the shells of shellfish. The body uses this to make a variety of other chemicals that are used in the construction of cartilage, ligaments, tendons, and a thick fluid that is found around the joints. Taking a supplement with glucosamine sulfate could increase the cartilage or fluid around the joints and/or stop or slow the breakdown of these substances. Glucosamine sulfate is stabilized with sodium chloride, also known as table salt. The sulfate part of glucosamine sulfate is the most important component. Sulfur is necessary for building and repairing cartilage.

Glucosamine Reduce Joint Problems:

Glucosamine sulfate has been shown to work as well or better than some non-prescription pain medications, and is said to improve movement and pain levels. Another advantage of glucosamine sulfate is that there is some evidence that shows that using this component in a joint supplement may actually keep joint problems from progressing. It is an indispensable element needed for the functions of the human body.

Why is it Important as We Age?

Glucosamine is a natural sugar compound made from glucose and the amino acid glutamine found naturally in the body that plays an important role in the formation, maintenance, and repair of cartilage and other body tissues. But, its production slows with aging when people need it the most. Glucosamine benefits cartilage. It stimulates the production of molecules glycosaminoglycans and proteoglycans, two essential building blocks of cartilage.

What Causes Joint Pain?

Sooner or later, almost everyone is going to have to put up with a little joint pain. Often, it’s because the spongy tissue, or cartilage, that cushions your joints has gotten worn away—by sports injuries, overuse, or just a lifetime or wear-and-tear. Loint problems is more common in older people, whose joints have had more time to wear out. But young people can have joint pain, too. In fact, for reasons I’ll get to in a moment, it’s getting more common among younger folks.

Relieving Joint Problems With Glucosamine:

Glucosamine is a naturally occurring amino sugar in the body that plays a vital role in keeping cartilage and other body tissues healthy. As people get older their bodies start producing less glucosamine. This gradual diminishing of glucosamine causes the bone cartilage to lose some of its elasticity and become stiff and inflexible, eventually resulting in joint problems. Glucosamine supplements are designed to slow this process by compensating for the loss of the amino sugar that occurs with age. Glucosamine supplements are believed to help in the production of glycosaminoglycan, a molecule that helps repair and rebuild damaged cartilage.

Glucosamine Helps With Bone Problems:

Preliminary evidence suggests that glucosamine with and without chondroitin sulfate may preserve articular cartilage, decrease pain, increase physical function, and enhance self-care activities .

Glucosamine Against High Cholesterol:

Glucosamine has been studied for its possible benefits in lowering low-density lipoprotein (LDL or "bad") cholesterol. It has also been studied for increasing high-density lipoprotein (HDL or "good") cholesterol. Results from these studies show that glucosamine lacked significant benefits.

Glucosamine Helps With Knee Problems:

Evidence supports the use of glucosamine sulfate taken by mouth to helps knee problems. Nearly all studies have used glucosamine sulfate supplied by Rotta Research Laboratorium, a manufacturer in Europe. It is unclear if glucosamine sold by other manufacturers are equally effective. Studies demonstrating a lack of efficacy have included people with severe osteoarthritis or used formulas other than glucosamine sulfate.

Glucosamine Is A Building Block Of Healthy Joints:

Glucosamine helps you get to the root of the problem by supporting and nourishing connective tissues and cartilage. One study showed it took 4 weeks for glucosamine to surpass ibuprofen with respect to joint comfort, demonstrating it takes longer to work but ultimately produced better results.
