DESCRIPTION:

LITTLE TROLL - This is our first introduction in 2018 of one of our own hybrids.   This is an intermediate size hybrid that sort of averages the traits of both of its parents.  Oliganthum is the smallest crinum and razafindratsirea is a rare African species.  The pure white flowers and its size makes this an oliganthum on steroids.  The thin, slightly recurving petals form on to 6 flowers on 32” tall scapes.  The plant has a very small footprint only needing about 1 square foot.  It multiplies very fast and blooms from July to September forming bulbs up to about 2” in diameter.

We grow over 1000 different crinum, including about 350 of our own hybrids.

BACKGROUND:

(Oliganthum x Razafindratsirea) (Nestor White hybrid, 2008).   Pollen from the rare African species, Razafindratsirea was used on the diminutive species, Oliganthum.  We first started our hybridization program in 2007, and this was a cross done in June 2008 which first bloomed in 2014.  Plant hybridization is a slow process and it can easily take 10 years, or more to bring a crinum bulb to market.  Hopefully, this will just be the first of hundreds of new hybrids that our nursery will introduce into the marketplace.

When Nestor was a child, his mother used to read to him from a children's series of hard cover books, almost like encyclopedias, called Childcraft.  One of his favorite scary stories was about a troll that lived under a bridge, and there was a drawing of this creature in the book.  That story and troll were the inspiration for the name, Little Troll, since oliganthum is a water loving bulb, and the bulb is the smallest in the crinum world, and razafindratsirea is certainly a "scary" name for a plant.

GROWING INSTRUCTIONS:

This is a late summer to fall bloomer and might be more tender than most crinum.  It does well here in northeast Florida, zone 9, but we do not think it would survive outside below zone 7+ or 8.  This is a very hardy and easy to grow bulb requiring no special care.  It tolerates a wide range of soils (but prefers rich soil).  In zone 8 we would recommend planting it a bit deeper and mulching heavily in the winter.  Bulbs can survive nicely out of the ground for extended periods if allowed to dry.  They prefer full sun, but partial shade is OK.  They will also make excellent, container plants.

DESCRIPTION OF ITEM FOR BID:

You are bidding on a medium-size bulb at least 2 years old and about  1/2-1" in diameter which should bloom within 2 years.  They don't like being disturbed, so it could take one year to "settle in."  Bulbs will be freshly dug, shipped bare root and with leaves March-November.  In the winter months the leaves may be absent.

WE SIZE OUR BULBS APPROXIMATELY BY AGE AS FOLLOWS: A few varieties can take 6 years or more to bloom.

Jumbo bulb – has bloomed at least 2 years, close to the maximum size for that particular plant (6+ years old)

Large bulb - should bloom this year or next (3+ years old, close to, or at blooming size)

Medium bulb - should bloom in 1-2 years (at least 2 years old)

Small bulb - should bloom 2-4 years (current year or 1-2 year old offset)

Seedling bulb - started from seed (usually in its first year of growth unless otherwise stated)
