A interesting and rare antique Japanese clockwork insect trap dating from around 1900.
This ingenious Japanese antique is designed to catch insects to feed to the pet lizard, goose etc. Housed in a wooden case the trap runs on a clockwork motor wound by a heavy brass key through a brass eye on the RHS of the box. When wound the clockwork motor rotates a cubodial drum located on its LHS. The face of the drum would be coated with an appropriate medium eg. honey to atract and catch insects. As the drum rotates the captured insects would be brushed of by a wooden paddle, falling into the back of the cabinet. Attracted by the light the insects would pass through a mesh cone to be contained in the brass edged mesh cage ready for removal. The clockwork motor is housed behind two sliding panels to allow easy access for maintenance. One door has the manufacturers pressed brass plate attached. The cubodial drum and the brushing paddle are slide fit for easy removal for cleaning etc. The cage is again slide fit and has a slide fit panel to access its interior and remove the insects.
