For sale is the 1988 2nd Edition of Tree and Leaf by J.R.R. Tolkien. This version includes several works by Tolkien, the first being his essay ‘On Fairy Stories’. This was a based on a lecture Tolkien gave and was first published in the 1947 ‘Essays Presented to Charles Williams’, a collection of works by various writers in commemoration of Tolkien’s friend and co-inkling Charles Williams. In it, Tolkien defends the fairy tale (or sub-creation) and justifies it’s effectiveness and importance within the context of literature and life. It can clearly be seen as a precursor to his great work, The Lord of the Rings. This is followed by the short story ‘Leaf by Niggle’, first published in the ‘Dublin Review’ in 1945. It is a charming and engaging tale of an artist and his obsession and love of detail. The story is often seen as an allegory of Tolkien’s own creative process and to some extent, his own life. The book is closed with a poem Tolkien wrote in 1931, ‘Mythopoeia’. Inspired by a discussion with C.S. Lewis and Hugo Dyson, the poem explains and defends creative myth-making and is a beautiful and fitting conclusion to the book. In this edition is also an introduction by Tolkien’s son Christopher.
