Good quality miniature portrait of a lady in white seating on a sofa. Her dress
and hairstyle provide the date of this portrait's execution: sometime between
1810 and 1815.
Stylistic criteria of this miniature fully correspond to that of works of
Parisian miniaturist Motelay who was active at the turn of 19th century (for
comparison see latter's works in our possession).
Besides biographical information provided by Schidlof, Nathalie
Lemoine-Bouchard was able to discover the following: "… Le citoyen
(citizen) Motelay lived in 1795 in Paris, 25, place Dauphine and, in the same
year, exhibited at the Salon de Paris a few portrait miniatures. He is possibly
the same Etienne Motelay who is mentioned as "p(eintre). agé 25 ans…natif
de Caen, protégé par M. Houdon…" in the registry of students of Ecole de
l'Academie of Paris dated 27th of March 1784.
Schidlof writes: "..some of works of Motelay have a warm colouring similar
to that of Hall, of whom Motelay was an imitator".
