The technique of applying henna to objects is relatively new and has emerged from traditional tattoos with henna on the skin. With this technique, you can create relief motifs on many substrates such as stone, glass, canvas, plastic, wood, cardboard, candles, fabric by filling in the henna paste, or design drawings in mahogany brown or black by removing the paste.

Thats how it works:

Apply the henna to the surface

• Select an item you want to design.

  • Whether stone, glass, canvas, plastic, wood, cardboard, candles, fabric: henna can be applied to all kinds of surfaces.

• Apply the paste and let it dry.

• Either:

  • Remove the henna to get a flat drawing.
  • Or leave the henna as it is to get a relief drawing. Caution when handling your item, once the henna has dried, it will quickly become crumbly.

Henna on canvas

• Apply the henna directly to the canvas.

Henna on wood

• You have two options here: a flat drawing or a relief drawing.

• If you want a flat drawing, add some ammonia to the henna paste. The motif will take on the mahogany brown or black color of the henna.

• If you want a relief drawing, you definitely have to use varnish to fix the henna. If necessary, apply several layers and let each layer dry well.

• With a flat drawing, the varnish is not a must: it depends on the effect you want to achieve.

Henna on fabric

• Here the flat drawing is the only option.

• Natural fabrics such as silk or cotton are preferable here.

• You don't have to cover the henna with varnish or varnish, because henna cannot be washed out.

Henna on candles

• Only the relief drawing is possible here.

• Apply the henna paste to the candle.

• There are two possible techniques to fix the henna:

  • Bring paraffin to a boil in a water bath, then dip the candles into it.
  • Alternatively, you can also apply varnish or varnish.

Tips

• To prevent clumping, screen the paste with a women's knee-high sock or, even easier: put it in the blender.
