"A ruota libera / Freewheeling: the duet album" è il ventunesimo album di Graziano Romani, tra band quali Rocking Chairs, Megajam 5 e una lunga carriera solista, ed è inoltre il suo terzo disco su etichetta Route 61 Music.

Così è descritto nelle parole dell'artista: "Il concept di questo mio album ha a che fare con la dualità: le voci che duettano, le due lingue che coesistono - l’italiano e l’inglese e in un caso anche il dialetto reggiano - ed anche l’incontro tra le mie due grandi passioni: la musica e il fumetto. Tutti elementi che ho vissuto, ma mai tutti insieme. A un certo punto ho immaginato un ingranaggio di voci, parole e colpi di matita. Ho cullato l’idea di fare interpretare queste canzoni condivise con colleghi che ammiro e altrettanti artisti della letteratura disegnata. Vedere la mia musica filtrata oltre che da chi ha cantato o suonato con me, anche dal talento e dalla visione di alcuni geni del fumetto ha sommato felicità alla felicità".

L'opera è costituita da sei brani originali scritti da Graziano Romani più "Paz" dei Gang, "Preghiera" di Stefano Rosso e due incursioni nel folk, quello dell'Appennino reggiano presentato in "Alla guerra" e il traditional irlandese "Molly Malone". Accanto a Romani agiscono qui band italiane con una consistente storia alle spalle come Gang, Cheap Wine e Lassociazione, solisti di area rock, blues e folk come Edward Abbiati (già conosciuto leader dei Lowlands), l'ex voce dei Modena City Ramblers Cisco e Arianna Antinori. Se Michele Gazich è il violino tutto italiano che aveva impreziosito la musica di Mark Olson dei Jayhawks, Massimo Bubola e Mary Gauthier, tocca all'irlandese Andy White e all'americana Carolyne Mas portare quel vento internazionale che da sempre contraddistingue a più livelli le produzioni discografiche dell'eclettico compositore e cantante che mai ha rinunciato a confrontarsi con le tante musiche (e musicisti) che l'hanno ispirato.

L'album ha la particolarità di presentare sia nella versione CD che in quella in vinile tavole inedite ed esclusive firmate da fumettisti di nome, dal Texiano Civitelli allo Zagoriano Laurenti, dall'underground di Rosenzweig al supereroistico Camuncoli: un considerevole valore aggiunto a tanta musica pastosa, rassicurante e curiosa che scava come sempre nella cultura rock ("Napoleon in rags" nata con i Rocking Chairs trent'anni fa lancia nuovamente lo sguardo verso il declino di una rockstar come tante) e che si allunga nel territorio della tradizione popolare ("Molly Malone", da cultura gaelica, è l'inno di tanti dubliners).

"A Ruota Libera / Freewheeling: The Duet Album" is Graziano Romani's 21st album in a series of records released with bands such as Rocking Chairs and Megajam 5 and as a solo artist; it's also his third album on Route 61 Music label.

In the artist's own words: "The concept of this album of mine has to do with duality: the voices that duet, the two languages that coexist - Italian and English and in one case also the dialect of Reggio Emilia - and also the meeting between my two great passions, music and comics. I lived all of them, but never all together. At one point I imagined a mechanism made of voices, words and pencil strokes, and I thought about having these songs interpreted by colleagues that I admire and also some cartoonists. Seeing my music filtered by those who sang or played with me as well as by talented comics geniuses added happiness to happiness".

The albums consists of six original pieces written by Graziano Romani, plus "Paz" by Gang, "Preghiera" by Stefano Rosso and two folkish tunes: "Alla guerra", with a Reggio Apennines flavour, and the Irish traditional "Molly Malone". The artists featured here have a consistent musical history: Gang, Cheap Wine, Lassociazione, blues and folk-rock soloist Edward Abbiati (formerly known leader of Lowlands), Modena City Ramblers' former singer Cisco and Arianna Antinori. While Michele Gazich is the all-Italian violinist that embellished the music of Mark Olson (from Jayhawks), Massimo Bubola and Mary Gauthier, it is up to the Irish Andy White and the American Carolyne Mas to represent the international wing that has always characterized Graziani's production.

Both the CD and the vinyl editions of the album include, as part of the artwork/packaging, exclusive comic panels illustrated by remarkable cartoonists such as Fabio Civitelli, Mauro Laurenti, Maurizio Rosenzweig and Giuseppe Camuncoli: a considerable added value to a lot of already sumptuous and curious music that, as usual, digs in rock culture and stretches in the territory of the popular tradition.
