Drs Du Puy and Cribb are recognized authorities on the genus Cymbidium and the authors of several books and many papers on Orchids. This work, prepared at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, is the result of five years of research and many hours of field work in the Asian tropics and subtropics.

The introductory chapters cover the structure and anatomy of the species, pollination and floral fragrances, distribution, biogeography and evolution, their ethnobotanist uses and how to grow them. A chapter on the history of hybridization has been specially written by Ernest Hetherington and Andy Easton. The main part of the text comprises a complete taxonomic account of all known species in the genus. Some are depicted in 28 watercolour paintings by Claire Smith that were awarded a Gold Medal by the Royal Horticultural Society.

This standard reference book would be a fine addition to any orchid library.
