"Nanticoke Dam."

- This handsome engraving was published in 1872 in Picturesque
America, a
book inspired by the prose of William Cullen Bryant during an era when
the wild landscape of rural America excited awe and wonder among its
citizens, most of whom were city dwellers.

Granville Perkins was an American illustrator and painter, best known
for landscape and marine
subjects. He contributed illustrations to numerous journals and books
of the 1870s and 1880s.

Nanticoke Dam was built in 1830, the same year the North Branch Canal
was extended to Nanticoke,
bringing increased commercial traffic to Luzerne County and the Wyoming
Valley.
