Volume I includes a brief biography of the author, a presentation of artifacts, his travels along the Yellowstone River, contact with the Mandan and Minatree villages, and a detailing of his travels to the mouth of the Teton River.

Volume II provides a more in-depth detailing of his travels with an emphasis on the life of the natives as a rudimentary ethnography that looks at cultural features such as spirituality, totem, song and dance, war, trade, illness, art and social organization. Additionally the author offers a genealogical analysis of the native's relation to the Jewish people through customs and anatomical similarities.

George Catlin (1796-1872) was an American painter, author, and traveler, who specialized in portraits of Native Americans in the Old West. Traveling to the American West five times during the 1830s, Catlin was the first white man to depict Plains Indians in their native territory. [Wikipedia]
