Bluetooth is used to connect devices in close proximity. PCs, cell phones, printers, PDAs, GPS receivers, mice, keyboards, access points, but also household appliances and cars can be equipped with Bluetooth.
 
Bluetooth enables convergence
Bluetooth is the technology that enables convergence between PCs, consumer electronics and telecommunications in the simplest way. Bluetooth replaces cables/plugs and automatically translates file formats from a wide variety of devices.
 
The radio technology supports synchronous data transmission, as required for voice applications, as well as asynchronous transmission, the latter in a symmetrical or asymmetrical mode. The data width is currently a maximum of around 3 Mbit per second; higher data rates of up to 100 Mbit/s are planned for the future. Bluetooth devices use the license-free ISM band (Industrial, Scientific, Medical) at 2.4 GHz, as do DECT telephones (Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunication), microwave ovens and Wi-Fi according to 802.11b/g.
