DEBIDO A UN FLORERO, COLOMBIA ES INDEPENDIENTE. La historia nos dice que todo comenzó con un jarrón. Era viernes, 20 de julio y día de mercado, cuando un criollo fue a pedir prestado un jarrón. Un acto, efímero en apariencia, desatado en un choque entre criollos y españoles y que culminó en la independencia de Colombia. Sin embargo, hoy está claro que lo que sucedió entonces no fue un hecho espontáneo como los que habían tipificado la vida política colonial. Fue la consecuencia de varias circunstancias que sucedieron una tras otra y terminaron en una gran revolución popular. Los criollos tenían razones fundamentales que convirtieron el 20 de julio en la gota que desbordó el vidrio. En las reuniones reunidas entre 1808 y 1810, a pesar de que los criollos fueron invitados, la representación fue mínima: entre 36 representantes peninsulares, había 9 estadounidenses. Esta situación hizo que los criollos pensaran por primera vez sobre la posibilidad de crear un estado como nación.
BECAUSE OF A VASE, COLOMBIA IS INDEPENDENT. History tells us that everything began with a vase. It was Friday - July 20th and market day - when a Creole went to borrow a vase. An act, ephemeral in appearance, untied in a clash between Creoles and Spanish and culminated in the independence of Colombia. Nevertheless, it is clear today that what happened by then was not a spontaneous fact like those that had typified the political colonial life. It was the consequence of several circumstances that happened one after the other and ended in a great peoples revolution. The Creoles had fundamental reasons which turned on July 20th into the drop that overflowed the glass. At the meetings gathered between 1808 and 1810, in spite of the fact that the Creoles were invited, the representation was minimal: among 36 peninsular reps, there were 9 Americans. This situation made the Creoles think for the first time about the possibility of creating a State a Nation.
