Two Piano Four hands  Duet THE MILL by Joachim Raff Transcribed by George Anson

Joseph Joachim Raff was a German-Swiss composer, teacher, and pianist.  Raff was very prolific, and by the end of his life was one of the best known German composers, though his work is largely forgotten today.

His String Quartet No. 7 dates from 1876, and was an immediate success from its premier.   It tells the same story as Schubert's song cycle by the same name.   A young man passes by a mill and see a beautiful girl, the maid of the mill.  For him, it is love at first sight.   The second movement, subtitled The Mill, was at one time  one of the most famous movements in the entire string quartet literature and was frequently played by itself as an encore

Amateurs will certainly get pleasure from this fine work.  It would also be well recived by audiences in a recital.

There are two copies - see photo #2 and #9.  Photos #2 - #9 show samples.

This string quarter has been transcribed for two pianos by George Anson.
