antique lithographed large-format fold-out 1863 map of Rockland harbor
and vicinity, printed
more than 150 years ago.
- This map is drawn on a scale
of 1:20,000 and has excellent detail throughout,
including numerous depth soundings, bottom conditions, information on
tides, and shoreline features, with the locations of individual homes
and property lines.
- The image area measures a generous 53.4 x 46.5 cm
[21" x 18¼"], and named places and features include the Owl's Head
Light, Sheep Island, Crockett's Point,
Lake Chickawacka, Clam Cove, Muscle Ridge Channel, Monroe Island,
Atlantic Point, and Ram Island.
- The map was published in Report of the
Superintendent of the Coast
Survey, Showing the Progress of the Survey during the Year 1863,
printed at the Government Printing Office,
Washington,
D.C., 1864.
- It was compiled under the direction of
A.D. Bache, Superintendent, one of
the most influential American cartographers of the 19th century.
Triangulation was by George A. Fairfield
and sub-assistant J.A. Sullivan.

Condition: It is in very good condition, bright
and clean, with no rips, tears, or writing. There is faint toning on
the folds, somewhat exaggerated by the camera, and it is printed on a
lightweight paper, typical of mid-19th century government fold-outs. It
is blank on the back, with no printing on the reverse side. Please
