Product Description:
This offering is for a pair of new-old-stock Shimano 600 clip-style pedals (model PD-6400) from the late 80's. These pedals would have been positioned towards the upper end of Shimano's competition-level components, so among Shimano's better quality offerings from 20+ years ago. They weigh-in at about 490 grams (for the pair, as pictured with rare factory cleats and related mounting hardware), incorporate a one-piece, forged alloy pedal body, a 9/16" chromoly steel axle and a cup-n-cone bearing design that should make for a fairly strong/durable pedal with proper servicing. These pedals pre-date the advent of the clipless pedal system, so they will require matching toe clips that are not included (but the proprietary mounting brackets and bolts that anchor the toe clips to the pedals are included). I was also not provided matching toe straps with these pedals, but I believe functional straps may be of a fairly generic variety (so not too difficult to procure). Although, the toe clips (with their somewhat unique triangular-shaped-three-hole design) may be difficult to source. It's my understanding the toe clips mount between the pedal body and the aforementioned brackets (so the brackets are critical to the installation of the toe clips, and as mentioned above, these brackets are included). Still, the toe clips appear to be in short supply and please keep this in mind when considering this offering. So just to confirm, this clip-style pedal system includes the base pedals, the proprietary (three-hole) mounting brackets, cleats and related mounting hardware. Although, the matching toe clips and toe straps are not included. As a result, these parts will have to be acquired (or recycled) from another source to complete this clip-style pedal system. As for condition, the pedals came to us in Shimano labeled plastic bags, which we believe to be original packaging from the factory. Now the packaging is not all that great, but it's still intact and has clearly offered some protection against shopwear, while also helping to preserve the silver finish over the years. So while these pedals are not in retail box perfect cosmetic condition, they still show fairly well (especially when considering their 80's vintage that probably translates into 30+ years of storage time). Make no mistake, I do still see some shopwear (scuffs and scratches), minor factory forging imperfections and likely a finishing process that does not rival the Campagnolo finishing process from this same era, but I still consider the overall cosmetic condition to be respectable...especially when considering the vintage.
