*Joseph Anthony Buzzelli (1907 - 1982/3?) Joseph Anthony Buzzelli was a prolific painter and sculptor. In a career spanning 55 years, the artist experimented across a range of modernist styles before concentrating on abstraction. His latter paintings also focused on social causes, especially environmental conservation. Buzzelli had seen the damage humanity had done to nature in his extensive travels. When he settled down in Casey Key in the 1960's, he was determined to prevent that from happening here. Preserving nature became the subject of many of his last paintings.
Buzzelli’s early work reveals influences ranging from Cezanne to the rough truths of Social Realism. His claustrophobic painting of miners in a coal cart (1938) reflects this raw honesty - all the more poignant knowing that Buzzelli’s father had died in a mining accident. But it’s not all darkness. His paintings of Miami’s South Beach from the 1950's are alive with color. Buzzelli’s undated “Coal Town” has the feel of a shattered stained glass window - or a Chagall. This fragmentation progresses through his later pieces, which show an affinity to Abstract Expressionism.
Buzzelli’s art reflected what he loved and attacked what made him angry. The art he created honored creation itself and raised a war cry against those who despoiled it.
