The electronic interior of the CF-U1 is technologically optimally designed for mobile use. The new Intel ® Centrino® Atom[TM] processor technology with a clock speed of 1.33 megahertz, together with the currently smallest and most energy-saving chipset, a solid state hard drive and 1 GB of RAM memory, ensures maximum computing power and sufficient graphics power with very low power consumption.

When developing the UMPC, Panasonic placed particular emphasis on a wide range of communication services and compatibility. In order to make the integration of the technical field service into the company network as effective as possible, the Toughbook CF-U1 has numerous interfaces such as WLAN, Bluetooth or optionally GPS. In contrast to most handhelds/PDAs, which can only be operated with PDA-based operating systems with limited user interface compatibility, the Toughbook CF-U1 enables the use of a full-fledged operating system such as Windows ® XP or Windows Vista®. Furthermore, it supports all standard user interfaces. The in-house systems do not need to be synchronized using utility programs. This not only saves time, but also additional costs for software development or adjustments. All of this ultimately enables faster and more efficient data throughput and higher productivity.

The prerequisite for this is the Internet access already integrated by Intel ® Centrino® Atom[TM] technology, which enables data transmission in WLAN radio networks in accordance with IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/draft-n with full functionality and without restrictions. In regions without WiFi coverage, the device can access the 3G broadband network via an optionally integrated HSDPA module.

Tailored functionality with high ease of use

Whether in the field or in the office: Numerous interfaces and optional components enable individual equipment for every work area. GPS, one or two dimensional barcode readers, RFID technology, a 2 megapixel camera and a fingerprint reader can be integrated into the Toughbook. The user can also choose between a numeric and alphanumeric keyboard. The device is available with interfaces such as the USB 2.0 port and an SD and SIM card slot. Peripheral devices can be connected wirelessly via Bluetooth 2.0. A mini-port replicator with smart card, LAN and serial interfaces, a magnetic card reader and a charging station with a double battery charger can also be purchased.

To ensure that the handheld remains comfortable in the hand even during long periods of use, Panasonic paid attention to an ergonomic design when designing the CF-U1: The side surfaces were coated with an anti-slip coating for the thumbs, and the bottom surface of the UMPC has a rounded surface that is adapted to the palms of the hands shape and is equipped with grip options for a better grip while typing on the keyboard. The key shape is particularly suitable for typing with the thumb. This is also characterized by high ease of use 14.22cm (5.6 inch) large LCD display with touchscreen. It can be easily operated using a pen; if necessary, the displayed content can be enlarged or reduced via zoom and scrolled back and forth using the integrated buttons.
