Picea abies / Norway Spruce

First introduced to the UK in the 1500s, Picea abies also known as Norway Spruce is still a very large choice for many as their Christmas tree in December although in recent years has come more in competition by other trees such as Abies Nordmanniana as a favoured Christmas tree.

Picea abies will grow to be a large tree which can be seen outgrowing many other trees in a small or medium garden with its mature height of around 20m. Picea will also grow in a very pyramidal shape which looks amazing in any large garden or parkland. All year Norway Spruce can be seen displaying a magnificent deep green foliage which come into the winter months, will keep some colour compared to many other trees during this dark time of year.

Picea abies can withstand most soils and will thrive on free draining soils, will be able to withstand some costal conditions but is better not being the first line of defense. Once fully established, Picea abies will have a constant growth of around 60cm each year.
