Space Magnet: Earth

You never see our earth like this - completely without clouds. This image was taken from 60 individual cloud-free images taken by the Meteosat-5 satellite of parts of the Earth over a period of two months. Our earth is also called the "blue planet" because of its colour, which is created by the large oceans.

Seen from the sun, it is the first planet with a moon. The surface of the earth is constantly changing. The earth's crust consists of individual rigid plates that move against each other and shift so that the continents constantly move in different directions. However, this happens so slowly that we humans cannot perceive it. When two continental plates collide, there are earthquakes.

Like all planets, the earth rotates constantly around its own axis. This axis is at an angle of 23 degrees oblique to the Earth's orbit around the Sun. Thus the sun shines differently strongly on always other parts of the earth and warms them up differently strongly. This is how the seasons of the day and the seasons are created on Earth. The temperature differences in different zones on earth are also responsible for a large part of the weather on our planet, because warm and cold air masses mix.
