Description: The first printing of the first edition of O'Flaherty's brilliant novel set in the West of Ireland in the aftermath of the Civil War. Original cloth hardback with gilt titles to the spine. 7.5 inches by 4.75 inches. 352 pages. 

In very pleasing condition, with light bumping and wear to the edges (see pictures).  Clean and free of inscriptions. Binding sound and square. Mark to rear endpapers. A very nice example of the first printing.

Liam Ó Flaithearta (1896-1984) wrote mainly in English, although he was a native Irish speaker. He fought in the Irish Guards in the First World War. He was a founder member of the Irish Communist Party, and seized the Rotunda two days after the foundation of the Free State, flying the red flag and holding it for four days. He fought on the anti-Treaty side in the Battle of Dublin.
