Geschichte der Steppjacken

Bevor ich mich auf die Steppjacke konzentriere, wie wir sie heute kennen, ist es wichtig zu verstehen, was Quilten ist und wie es sich entwickelt hat.

Terminologie

Quilten bezieht sich auf jede Reihe von Nähten - entweder dekorativ oder nur in einer geraden Reihe -, bei der mindestens zwei Lagen Stoff kombiniert werden. Oft finden Sie eine dritte Polsterschicht oder Einlage zwischen den Stoffen, die den beliebten dreidimensionalen Look von Diamant-Steppjacken bietet. Der Begriff „Quilt“ scheint im 12. Jahrhundert in England entstanden zu sein und leitet sich vom lateinischen Wort cucita ab, was Kissen oder Polster bedeutet.

Quilt Geschichte

Obwohl Quilten im 17. Jahrhundert besonders beliebt wurde, reichen seine Wurzeln bis ins Mittelalter zurück. Interessanterweise wurde es nicht nur in Europa, sondern auch in Indien und Fernost eingesetzt. Am Anfang wurde Quilten hauptsächlich für Bettdecken verwendet, aber auch für Kleidung, die leicht und gleichzeitig isolierend sein sollte. Technisch gesehen besteht der Vorteil der Schichtung in der Zugabe von eingeschlossener Luft, die als Isolator wirkt. Durch das Quilten wird auch verhindert, dass sich Isoliermaterial wie Daunen bewegt. Abgesehen davon wurde es auch unter Rüstung verwendet, um die Metallanzüge tragbarer zu machen. Menschen, die sich keine Rüstung leisten konnten, trugen oft nur die gesteppte Unterwäsche.

Steve Guylas & die Husky Steppjacke

Angesichts der langjährigen Tradition des Quiltens scheint es überraschend, dass die Steppjacke, wie wir sie heute kennen, erst 1965 von Steve Guylas und seiner Frau Edna erfunden wurde. Herr Guylas wurde in Pennsylvania geboren und zog sich 1960 mit einer Augenkrankheit aus der US Air Force zurück. Er hatte das Gefühl, dass das einzige, was ihm noch übrig blieb, darin bestand, Geschäftsinhaber zu werden. Da er ein Anglophiler war, zog er mit seiner Frau nach England, wo er drei Unternehmen gründete: Erstens produzierte Husky Ltd in Tostock, Suffolk (später Husky Inc.), thermische Oberbekleidung und die berüchtigten Steppjacken, die er sogar an die Britische Königsfamilie. Zweitens das Husky Riding Centre Ltd. außerhalb von London, das als Indoor-Jumping-Center und schließlich als Tackle-Shop diente.

Alle Guylas-Geschäfte begannen mit dem Namen Husky. Als Land ging der Angel- und Jagdbegeisterte Guylas mit seinem Husky-Hund spazieren und wählte daher den Namen.

Das erste gesteppte Kleidungsstück, das Guylas entworfen hat, war eine wasserdichte Steppweste aus Polyester zum Schießen. Es wurde bald bei seinen Clubkollegen beliebt und so machte er eine Steppjacke. Anfangs waren sie nur in Hellolivgrün und Marineblau erhältlich, aber mit zunehmender Nachfrage wuchs das Produktportfolio ebenso wie die Farbpalette für die Jacken. Der wahrscheinlich wichtigste Faktor bei der Popularisierung der Jacke war die britische Königsfamilie. Die Königin würde eine gesteppte Huskyjacke mit einem braunen Cordkragen zum Reiten tragen, und bald folgten Prominente in Großbritannien und Europa. In den 1980er Jahren wurde es auch zu einem festen Bestandteil der Sloane Rangers in Großbritannien und wechselte dann in die USA.

Zieht euch warm an, Hipster

Hat der Hipster nicht schon genug kaputtgemacht? Er hat dem Fernfahrer die Basecap entwendet und dem Buchhalter die Kastenbrille. Jetzt schnappt er sich die Steppjacke - und ein elitäres Abgrenzungsmittel ist plötzlich nur noch Allerweltmode. Nun reicht's aber!

haben sie getragen, Leute, die im Berliner Prenzlauer Berg ein Zeichen setzen wollten. Slacker, Hipster, Neopunks? Nicht mit mir, Freunde! Ich trage alles, was nach Upperclass, Yale-Abschluss und Ferien in den Hamptons aussieht. Ich habe so viele Karo-Hemden im Schrank, dass ich beim Anziehen morgens epileptische Anfälle kriege. Die Krokodilshaut an den Fingern? Kommt vom Button-down zuknöpfen. Budapester? Klar hab ich welche, und zwar als Hausschuhe. Alles andere wäre Laisser-faire.

Die Steppjacke gehörte für mich zum Basisoutfit. Am besten das Modell "L" von B, in schönem Marineblau. Wenn alle wirken, als hätte man sie gerade aus dem Second-Hand-Shop gezerrt, musst du aussehen wie ein Konfirmand auf dem Weg zur Kirche. Passend zum Cordkragen kann man eine gleichfarbige Hose anziehen. Der Effekt ist ungefähr der, den man erzielt, wenn man ein Rilke-Gedicht aufsagt und im Hintergrund läuft Musik von Mozart.

Der Hipster hat nun alles kaputtgemacht. Der Hipster kolonialisierte Moden bislang nur nach unten. Er hat dem Trucker stilistisch die Basecap entwendet, dem Buchhalter die Kastenbrille und allen Leuten, die nicht wissen, wie man eine Waschmaschine richtig bedient, das T-Shirt mit ausgeleiertem Kragen. Wenn du heute ein ehrlicher Fernfahrer bist und stolz eine dieser bescheuerten Kappen trägst, die so hoch sind, dass man auf ihnen Werbung schalten könnte, dann siehst du aus wie ein Hipster. Pass auf, sonst wirst du schneller zu einer Vernissage eingeladen, als du "Noch'n Astra, bidde" sagen kannst.

Hipster mögen auch sogenannte Skinnyjeans: spindeldürre Hosenbeine, und oben wird es unförmig breit, als sei man ein Junkie, der eine Windel trägt. In meiner Terminologie sind das Einkackhosen. Wenn du also ein ehrlicher Junkie bist und deine entzugsbedingte Inkontinenz in den Griff kriegen musst, dann ... Sie verstehen, worauf ich hinaus will.

Trägt der Hipster also Steppjacke in grässlichen Farben, in Orange und in Rot, ein Rot in Anführungszeichen, ein Poser- und Angeberrot. Es gibt die Steppjacke überall, in den Szenevierteln von Frankfurt und Stuttgart, in Schwabing, in Hamburg und eben auch in Berlin. Bei HP werden sie gekauft in einem total fancy Gelbton - fancy ist ein widerliches Hipsterwort - und dazu eine Skinnyjeans und vielleicht eine jener debilen Wollmützen, die Männer mittlerweile sogar drinnen tragen. Vermutlich ist denen die Fontanelle noch nicht zugewachsen, und sie haben Angst, dass ihnen ihre Ich-hab-eine-echt-fancy-App-am-Start-Ideen aus der Birne purzeln.

Wachs willst du denn?

Jetzt wird es schwierig mit der Abgrenzung, früher war das in Berlin ja vergleichsweise einfach. Man putzte sich morgens die Zähne und war schon overdressed. Wenn die Steppjacke vom Hipster vereinnahmt wird, bleibt nur noch die Wachsjacke, ein "Ashridge Jacket" in Jägergrün oder in diesem leicht kotigen Braun, bei dem man sich mit Dung besprühen lassen kann, ohne dass es dem Look abträglich ist.

Aber, machen wir uns nichts vor, die Wachsjacke ist haptisch eine Herausforderung: als hätte sich ein Neurodermitis-Kranker mit Massageöl eingerieben und das Ganze anschließend mit Haarspray imprägniert. Distinktionstechnisch ist das natürlich top. Der Wachsjackenträger erklärt: Bleib mir vom Leib, verzieh dich.

Die Steppjacke passt so gesehen weder zum Hipster noch zu mir, dem Snob. Anders als die Wachsjacke besteht sie nicht auf Abstand, sie sagt: Schmieg dich an mich, mach es dir bequem. Von der Machart erinnert sie an Heizdecken, an Kaffeefahrten ältlicher gepflegter Damen, die Bridge spielen und zum Valium einen guten Earl Grey zu schätzen wissen.

Auf Tuchfühlung mit der Utopie

Ich gehe so weit zu sagen: Die Steppjacke ist aus dem Stoff, aus dem soziale Utopien gemacht werden. Sie symbolisiert die Sehnsucht nach Gemeinschaft und die Einladung, sich anzulehnen an den Nächsten (was, wie ich probiert habe, in überfüllten Szenelokalen ein kurzes heimliches Ausruhen an der Schulter des Nebenmanns ermöglicht).

Die Steppjacke kann man gut zu einem Kissen zusammenlegen, auch Hunde lassen sich darin wärmen, es muss ja nicht gleich ein Weimaraner sein. Letztlich ist die Steppjacke ein integratives und sogar ideologiekritisches Stück Mode. Mit ihrer Schraffur erinnert sie an Gummizellen. In Zeiten, da der Bürger an den Verhältnissen irre zu werden droht (Finanzkrise, Internet, Lanz), ist das die treffende Ästhetik. Das aufgeklärte Subjekt weiß um den Wahnsinn der Lage und verwahrt sich selbst in sicherer Wattierung. Kafka hätten Wachsjacken gefallen.

Genau besehen gibt es sowieso nur zwei Lager: Die Steppjacken- und die Wachsjackenträger. Als Thatcher sagte,

JACKEN MIT STEPP SIND 2020 EIN UNERWARTETER MODETREND

Einst vom amerikanischen US Air Force Piloten Steve Gulyas entwickelt, geht die Steppjacke heute über ihre eigentliche Funktion hinaus. Dass sie jedoch seit den 50ern so einige Winde und Wetter ausgehalten hat, zeigen die etwas verstaubten Modelle im Secondhand-Store um die Ecke. Falls Sie sogar selbst noch ein Exemplar im Kleiderschrank hängen haben, oder der liebe Vater sein Modell sowieso nicht mehr trägt, lohnt sich ein kurzer Frühlingsputz für die Jacke. Der stilsichere Glanz macht sich spätestens dann bemerkbar, wenn man sie zum lässigen Alltagslook kombiniert.

SO WIRD DER JACKEN-TREND DER STEPPJACKEN GESTYLT

Sie haben Steppjacken bisher eher als bieder und steif betrachtet? So ist es zu einem gewissen Teil tatsächlich auch. Doch letztlich kommt es beim Styling dieses Modetrends genau auf diesen Touch von Seriosität an. So sorgt der schlichte Klassiker beispielsweise als Übergangsjacke kombiniert zur weiter Jeans und T-Shirt oder Hoodie für einen lässigen Kontrast. Dieser lässt das Outfit sofort spannender und – wenn wir schon dabei sind – besonders zeitgemäß wirken. Denn wenn man das aktuelle Jahrzehnt unter einem modischen Schlagwort zusammenfassen möchte, dann wohl Eklektizismus: Die Verschmelzung und von verschiedenen Stilrichtungen in einem Look.

Wie diese Stilregel funktioniert, sah man bei der Frühjahr-/Sommerpräsentation 2020 von Fendi. Die rosarote Steppjacke mit lässig überschnittenen Schultern wirkt zum Minirock und den in Sandalen getragenen Socken geradezu jung, frisch und gleichzeitig selbstbewusst. Dass man mit diesem Trend sogar in die sozusagen übernächste Saison investiert, zeigten wiederum die kürzlich gezeigten Herbst-/Winterkollektionen 2020/21 von Ganni und Cecilie Bahnsen. Keine Angst, zuerst darf man sich natürlich auf den Frühling freuen. Nichtsdestotrotz fällt einem die Entscheidung vielleicht etwas leichter, wenn man sich des Potenzials eines Kleidungsstückes bewusst ist. Denn in vielseitige Klassiker statt in kurzweilige Hypes zu investieren, ist nicht nur ein cooler Zeitgeist-Trend der Mode. Vielmehr ist es eine grundsätzliche Einstellung, die dem eigenen Kleiderschrank sowie der Umwelt wohl ganz guttun könnte.

The quilted jacket was part of the basic outfit for me. The best is the model "L" from B, in a beautiful navy blue. If everyone seems to have just been dragged out of the second-hand shop, you have to look like a confirmand on the way to church. Matching the cord collar, you can wear trousers of the same color. The effect is roughly what you get when you recite a Rilke poem and Mozart music is playing in the background.

The hipster has now broken everything. The hipster colonized fashions so far only down. He stole the baseball cap from the trucker, the box glasses from the accountant, and the t-shirt with a worn collar for all people who don't know how to operate a washing machine properly. If you're an honest truck driver today and proudly wears one of those stupid caps that are so high that you could advertise them, you look like a hipster. Be careful, otherwise you will be invited to a vernissage faster than you can say "Noch'n Astra, bidde".

Hipsters also like so-called skinny jeans: spindly legs, and at the top it gets bulky, like being a junkie wearing a diaper. In my terminology, these are boxing pants. So, if you're an honest junkie and you need to get your incontinence from under control, then ... you understand what I'm getting at.

So the hipster wears a quilted jacket in hideous colors, in orange and red, a red in quotation marks, a pose and show red. The quilted jacket is everywhere, in the trendy districts of Frankfurt and Stuttgart, in Schwabing, in Hamburg and also in Berlin. At HP they are bought in a totally fancy shade of yellow - fancy is a disgusting hipster word - plus a pair of skinny jeans and perhaps one of those debilitant wool hats that men now even wear inside. Probably the Fontanelle has not yet grown to them, and they are afraid that their I-have-a-really-fancy-app-at-the-start ideas will come out of their pears.

Do you want wax?

Now it will be difficult to draw the line, which used to be comparatively easy in Berlin. You brushed your teeth in the morning and were already overdressed. If the quilted jacket is consumed by the hipster, all that's left is the wax jacket, an "Ashridge Jacket" in hunter green or in this slightly spotty brown, which can be sprayed with manure without detracting from the look.

But let's not kid ourselves, the wax jacket is a haptic challenge: as if a neurodermatitis patient had rubbed himself with massage oil and then impregnated the whole thing with hairspray. From this point of view, the quilted jacket doesn't fit either the hipster or me, the snob. Close contact with utopia

I go so far as to say: the quilted jacket is made of the material from which social utopias are made. It symbolizes the longing for community and the invitation to lean against one's neighbor (which, as I have tried, allows a brief, quiet rest on the shoulder of the person next to me in crowded scene bars).

The quilted jacket can be folded well into a pillow, even dogs can be warmed in it, it doesn't have to be a Weimaraner. Ultimately, the quilted jacket is an integrative and even ideologically critical piece of fashion. With its hatching, it is reminiscent of rubber cells. In times when the citizens are at risk of going crazy (financial crisis, internet, Lanz), this is the right aesthetic. History of Quilted Jackets

Before I focus on the quilted jacket as we know it today, it is important to understand what quilting is and how it developed.

Terminology

Quilting refers to any run of stitching – either decoratively or just in a straight run – that combines at least two layers of cloth. Often, you will find a third padding layer or interlining between the fabric, which provides the popular, three-dimensional look on diamond quilted jackets. The term ‘quilt’ seems to have originated in England in the 12th century and derives from the Latin word cucita, which means cushion or bolster.

Quilt History

Although quilting became particularly popular in the 17th century, its roots go back to the middle ages. Interestingly, it was not just used in Europe, but also in India and the Far East. In the beginning, quilting was mostly used for bed covers but also for clothing that was supposed to be light weight and insulating at the same time. Technically, the advantage of layering is the addition of trapped air that acts as an insulator; quilting also keeps insulating material such as down from moving around. Apart from that, it was also used under armor to make the metal suits more wearable. People who could not afford a suit of armor would often just wear the quilted undergarment.

Steve Guylas & the Husky Quilted Jacket

Considering the long-standing tradition of quilting, it seems surprising that the quilted jacket as we know it today was just invented in 1965 by Steve Guylas and his wife, Edna. Mr. Guylas was born in Pennsylvania and retired from the US Air Force in 1960 with an eye disease, and so he felt that the only thing left for him was to become a business owner. Since he was an anglophile, he moved with his wife to England, where he started three businesses: First, Husky Ltd in Tostock, Suffolk (which later became Husky Inc.) produced thermal outerwear and the infamous quilted jackets that he even supplied to the British Royal family. Second, Husky Riding Center Ltd. just outside of London, which served as an indoor jumping center and lastly, a tackle shop.

All of the Guylas businesses started with the name Husky. As a country, fishing and hunting enthusiast Guylas would go out with his husky dog for a walk and hence he chose the name.

The first quilted garment Guylas designed was a waterproof, quilted vest made of polyester for shooting. It soon became popular with his club colleagues, and so he made a quilted jacket. Initially, they were only available in pale olive green and navy blue, but with increasing demand, the product portfolio grew as did the color palette for the jackets. Probably the most important factor in popularizing the jacket was the British Royal family. The Queen would wear a quilted husky jacket with a brown corduroy collar for riding, and soon celebrities in Britain and Europe followed. In the 1980’s it also became a wardrobe staple of the Sloane Rangers in the UK and then swapped over to the US.
