VEML7700 simplifies your life by calculating illuminance, which is the SI unit of light. You will get more consistent readings across multiple sensors because you don't need to deal with some unitless values. The sensor has a 16-bit dynamic range, can detect ambient light from 0 lux to about 120 klux, with a resolution as low as 0.0036 lx/ct, and has software adjustable gain and integration time.
The interface is easy-the sensor uses ordinary universal I2C. We put this sensor on a breakout board with a 3.3V regulator and logic level converter, so you can use it with a 3.3V or 5V power supply/logic microcontroller. We have written libraries for Arduino (C/C++) and CircuitPython (Python 3), so you can use this sensor for almost any type of device, even Raspberry Pi.
