Original antique map of the Battle of Saragossa, during the War of the Spanish Succession, published more than 275 years ago.

  • This spectacular map was compiled and engraved by James Basire and published in Nicolas Tindal's Continuation of Mr Rapin's History of England, London, 1744.

  • It is titled in the lower margin: "Plan of the Battle of Saragossa, fought August 9, 1710, between the troops of the Allies under Lieutenant General Stanhope and the Marshall Count Staremberg, and the French under the Duke of Anjou; the Emperor Charles, and the Duke of Anjou (King Philip) being both Present."

  • A decorative rococo cartouche shows the order of battle, with a letter key locating troop positions and movements of the Allies and French.

  • The image area of the map measures 36 x 47.7 cm [14¼" x 18¾"], and the distance scale in the lower corner is calibrated in rods, with five paces to a rod.

  • Condition:  This map is in very good condition, with a strong impression, on sound paper with two vertical folds, as issued. There's a faint diagonal crease in the lower right corner and a couple of archival tape reinforcements on the reverse side. There are no marks, rips, or tears, and the map is blank on the back, with no printing on the reverse side. Please see the scans, which include a view of the full sheet, and feel free to ask any questions.

  • This is an original, authentic antique map, not a reproduction or modern reprint, and it is fully guaranteed to be genuine.

  • The War of the Spanish Succession was a major European conflict of the early 18th century, triggered by the death in 1700 of the infirm and childless Charles II, the last Habsburg King of Spain. It ended in 1714, four years after the battle of Saragossa shown on this map.
