Fagus sylvatica ‘Asplenifolia’ / Cut-leaf Beech

Known to most people as the Cut-leaf beech or the Fern-leave beech; this fine cultivar of the common beech has a darker coloured foliage to the other beeches. With its unique foliage and its stunning looks, especially during summer; the Asplenifolia won the RHS Award of Garden Merit in 2002.

During the early spring and on into the summer, the Beech can be seen with long serrated leaves which begins off in a deep green colour and will last throughout the summer, eventually become a magnificent gold colour during the autumn providing an amazing display to keep the garden bright when coming into the summer months. Throughout its growth the Cut-leaf beech keeps a pyramidal shape when young and as time goes by, this will begin to broaden out.

Similarly to the other Beech trees, this tree performs best in any fertile and well drained soil but will struggle to grow in sand or clay. Best to be grown with space for the Asplenifolia to grow to its full potential.
