Giovanissimo entra in una bottega artigiana dedita alla lavorazione della cartapesta, dove apprende un mestiere squisitamente artigianale che fin dal diciottesimo secolo fa del capoluogo salentino un rinomato e fervido centro di produzione.
Nel dicembre del 1985 apre a Bologna “Arterie”, un “Centro di ricerca delle espressioni del viso”, laboratorio artigiano dove, oltre alla cartapesta, la lavorazione si indirizza nell’assemblaggio della stessa con il cuoio.
Dal 1985 al 1993 il lavoro procede e con esso si arricchiscono l’esperienza, la conoscenza, la ricerca della forma, dei colori e l’affinamento della tecnica. In questa fase di crescita nasce finalmente l’esperienza positiva con il mercato di Venezia, città della maschera, del carnevale e del teatro. La città lagunare diviene per Arterie base di partenza per un nuovo progetto a lei ispirati, alla sua tradizione e alla sua storia.
I suoi primi lavori in ceramica e cuoio riflettono un incontro spontaneo e appassionato tra l’uomo e la materia, dove quest’ultima, per la sua duttilità, si presta immediatamente e naturalmente alla propria manualità. Da questa plasticità ricava le sue particolari e uniche creazioni che esprimono, come usciti da una cuspide, i sentimenti e le sensazioni positive che si rifanno alle forze della natura (i quattro elementi), all'energia unificatrice del cosmo, riferendosi alla mitologia greca e alle civiltà antiche quali Incas, Azteche ed Egiziane. La tecnica di costruzione di un viso di cartapesta, per esempio, consiste nel posizionare uno strato formato da piccoli pezzi di carta assorbente bagnata all'interno dello stampo. Dopo aver steso uno strato di colla si uniscono altri pezzetti di carta assorbente, questa volta più spessa. Terminato anche questo strato si lascia asciugare il tutto. Il giorno dopo la maschera è pronta per essere stuccata e quindi resa uniforme per la decorazione finale, prettamente originale. Il cuoio, come già detto sopra, opportunamente lavorato, serve per adornare le maschere con veli o altro formando, armoniosamente, i corredi sinuosi e ondulati che convivono attorno le creazioni stesse.
Le sue maschere, figlie di un’arte ad ampio respiro, viaggiano e vengono esportate per l’Europa: Francia, Germania, Grecia e paesi d’oltralpe. Tutt’ora Mantovani grazie alla collaborazione con una rivista di settore e l’apporto del web diffonde la vendita dei suoi prodotti anche negli Stati Uniti.
Silvia Mantovani vive e lavora a Berra, una zona contadina e generosa del basso ferrarese dove ha aperto, più di vent'anni fa, "Arte Creativa" il suo laboratorio per la lavorazione della cartapesta, del cuoio, della ceramica e del metallo. Oltre all'atelier laboratorio ferrarese, nel 2005, apre anche una galleria d'artigianato handmade a Sirolo, provincia di Ancona, sede principale, tra le altre, del nostro negozio on line.

His early works in ceramic and leather reflect a spontaneous and passionate encounter between man and matter, where the latter, for its ductility lends itself immediately and of course to their manual. From this plasticity derives its particular and unique creations that express, as outputs by a spire, the feelings and positive feelings that go back to the forces of nature (the four elements), unifying energy of the cosmos, referring to Greek mythology, the ancient civilizations such as the Incas, Aztec and Egyptian. The construction technique of a face of paper, for example, consists in positioning a layer formed from small pieces of wet absorbent paper inside the mold. After spreading a layer of glue join other pieces of blotting paper, this time thicker. Finished even this layer is allowed to dry everything. The day after the mask is ready to be filled and then rendered uniform for the final decoration, purely original. Leather, as mentioned above, properly worked, used to adorn the masks with veils or other form, harmoniously, the winding and undulating kits that live around the same creations.
His masks, daughters of wide-ranging art, travel and are exported to Europe: France, Germany, Greece and the countries beyond the Alps. Still Mantovani through collaboration with a trade magazine and web contribution spreads the sale of its products in the United States.
