Rare antique Tekke tribal Turkoman 'ensi,' circa 1900, 48x61 inches. This collectible wool rug belonged to my great-uncle, a photographer, who traveled widely in the early to mid 1900s and collected tribal art. It was woven by the Tekke subtribe of the Turkoman tribe of Central Asia, around 1890-1900. It is in excellent condition for its age. No repairs have been made to it. All natural colors. Zoom over the images to magnify them and you will see that it is in excellent condition. 'Ensi or engsi' means 'door curtain' in the language of the Turkomans. This would have hung at the entrance of the tribal yurt or tent, and would unlikely have been used anywhere else. This piece is typically finely woven in glossy wool in natural dyes.
