Executed about 1840 (according to sitter's dress and hairstyle) in Zurich where the artist lived since 1831, it is another work of German-born miniaturist Hirnschrot in our possession.

Johann Andreas Hirnschrot (1799 Nuremberg - 1845 Zurich) began his studies at the Academy of Nuremberg in 1816; he exhibited there in 1820. Thereafter he went to Paris and worked for some time as a painter on porcelain at Sèvres porcelain factory. Later he devoted himself to portrait miniatures. In 1828 he went to Switzerland and worked in Geneva, Bern, Aarau and Zurich as a miniaturist and enamel. After another trip to Germany, he permanently settled in 1831 in Zurich, where he chiefly worked as a painter of stained glass windows.
Miniatures of Johann Andreas Hirnschrot are big rarities at the current antique market.
