This piece is influenced by the Art Nouveau style, very flowing and organic in shape. Art in the late 19th century, especially in Europe and then in the United States began to be inspired by natural forms and structures, not only in flowers and plants, but also in curved lines such as you see in this vase. These curves, sometime sudden and violent, similar to those of a whip, or vine, or water wave, are manifested in this vase. This style is generated by artists of the Art Nouveau period. Architects, artists, and designers made an effort to harmonize ornamental and functional pieces with the natural environment from about 1890 through 1915. All of these design elements come together is this wooden vase. We see a three ringed scroll pattern at the top, flared mouth representing the blooming flower, coupled with the artfully curved lines of the pedestal base, and the tan background (representing the earth), all designed to reflect the classic Art Nouveau style which encompasses the earth and it’s nature.
