Il Super Saiyan è una trasformazione dei Saiyan, raggiunta attraverso l'attivazione delle proprie Cellule S. Per ottenere questa trasformazione, si deve avere un cuore che, nonostante la grande rabbia, riesce a far combattere in modo totalmente calmo, come è successo a Son Goku. Vegeta invece riesce ad arrivarci per l' ira provocata dalla frustrazione di non riuscire a diventare Super Saiyan come il rivale Kakaroth. In Dragon Ball Z, vi sono altre due trasformazioni, il Super Saiyan di 2° livello e il Super Saiyan di 3° livello, oltre all'Ascendent Super Saiyan. Durante Dragon Ball GT, si scopre una nuova trasformazione, il Super Saiyan di 4° livello. In Dragon Ball Super, si scoprono invece altre quattro evoluzioni: Super Saiyan God, il Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan, Super Saiyan Rage ed il Super Saiyan Rosa. Super Saiyan is an advanced transformation assumed by members and hybrids of the Saiyan race with sufficient amounts of S-Cells in the Dragon Ball franchise. Earthlings (of Saiyan heritage) in Dragon Ball Online can also assume the transformation by wishing to have their dormant Saiyan powers unlocked.
The Super Saiyan form first premiered in April 1991, within chapter 317 of the Dragon Ball manga, entitled "Life or Death". It also made its anime debut in 1991, first appearing in Dragon Ball Z episode 95, "Transformed at Last". Within Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super, three further powered up transformations: the second and third forms succeed Super Saiyan, while the premier form also has two additional graded states that focus on power, and also the final form which is superior to the graded forms. The original Super Saiyan form can also be mastered to improve some of its traits and remove some flaws.
