"The Fortune Teller," by Francesco Vinia (Florence 1845-1902) date 1890 original chromolithograph.  Francesco Vinia is a highly regarded late nineteenth century Italian artist who began his career by working in the style of Meissonier.  By 1880 however Vinia was recognized for his own fluid style.  Talented in all genres, Vinia was best known for his classical depictions and his studies of 17th and 18th century life.  His work is in the permanent collections of many European galleries.
Chromolithography - Printing images in color by using a series of carefully registered tint stones became the most popular method for the original printmaking of everything from trade cards to fine art during the last half of the nineteenth century.  The far less costly advancements of photomechanical methods, however, made this original and complex form of graphic art all but obsolete by the early twentieth century.  A true chromolithograph - such as this- is easily distinguishable by its deep, bright, oil based colors.  Theyare becoming increasingly scarce and the buyer should therefore be aware of modern, photographically based reproductions which are surfacing in both antique shops and art galleries.
The image size is  16 1/2" in width and 12 3/4" in height.  Measurements above reflect the frame edge.
Printed on woven paper and with full margins as published around 1890.  A strong, bright impression and in very good condition.  Some marks on print but overall a lovely piece.  "The Fortune Teller," represents a prime, original example of the nineteenth century chromolithograph.
