published by Carlos Sanz.
- Joannes Stobnicensis was a Polish philosopher,
scientist and geographer of the early 16th century. He was a professor at
Kraków Academy and the author of numerous works on the subjects of logic,
grammar, astronomy, geography, mathematics, music, natural sciences,
and ethics.
- This map is from his most famous work,
entitled Introductio in Ptholomei Cosmographiam (Introduction to the
Cosmography of Ptolemy), which featured some of the first maps printed in
Poland.
- The image area measures 28.4 x 40.7 cm [11¼" x
16"] on a larger, cream-colored sheet with overall dimensions of
19½" x 27¼".
- It was one of the reproductions of maps and charts dating
from 1482 to 1598, compiled and published by Carlos Sanz in the early 1960s.
- Sanz was the author of several articles and books
dealing with cartography and the discovery of the New World. This map is from
Sanz' Bibliotheca Americana vetustissima: ultimas adiciones,
Madrid, 1960.
- Condition: It is in very good condition, with a few tiny spots in the
wide outer margins and no rips or tears. It is blank on the back, with no

- The full title in the upper margin is Hemisferio Occidental del Mapamundi de 1512 por
Joannes Stobnicza. Impreso en Cracovia. In the literature on early cartographers
you will find variations on the name of Joannes Stobnicensis, including Joannes

Stobnica.
