Freddie Mercury, nato Farrokh Bulsara, è stato un cantautore, compositore, musicista e polistrumentista britannico di origini parsi.
Nel 1970, insieme al chitarrista Brian May e al batterista Roger Taylor, fondò i Queen, ai quali un anno più tardi si aggiunse il bassista John Deacon. Per il gruppo rock britannico, con cui restò fino alla morte avvenuta all'età di 45 anni a causa di una broncopolmonite (complicanza dell'AIDS di cui era affetto), scrisse canzoni di successo come Bohemian Rhapsody, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Don't Stop Me Now, It's a Hard Life, Killer Queen, Love of My Life, Bicycle Race, Play the Game, Somebody to Love e We Are the Champions.
Oltre all'attività con i Queen, negli anni ottanta intraprese un breve percorso da solista con la pubblicazione di due album, Mr. Bad Guy nel 1985 e Barcelona nel 1988, quest'ultimo frutto della collaborazione con il soprano spagnolo Montserrat Caballé. In sua memoria, il 20 aprile 1992 fu organizzato a Londra il Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert, al quale parteciparono molti artisti musicali internazionali; parte dei proventi dell'evento furono utilizzati per fondare The Mercury Phoenix Trust, organizzazione impegnata nella lotta all'AIDS.
Ricordato per il suo talento vocale e l'esuberante personalità sul palco, è considerato uno dei più celebri e influenti artisti nella storia del rock e viene riconosciuto come uno dei migliori frontman di sempre; come membro dei Queen venne inserito nella Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nel 2001, e come singolo artista entrò a far parte della Songwriters Hall of Fame nel 2003. Nel 2008 la rivista statunitense Rolling Stone lo classificò 18º nella classifica dei migliori cento cantanti di tutti i tempi, mentre l'anno successivo si piazzò al primo posto tra le voci rock per Classic Rock. Freddie Mercury was a British singer, songwriter, record producer, and lead vocalist of the rock band Queen. Regarded as one of the greatest singers in the history of rock music, he was known for his flamboyant stage persona and four-octave vocal range. Mercury defied the conventions of a rock frontman, with his highly theatrical style influencing the artistic direction of Queen.
Born in 1946 in Zanzibar to Parsi parents, he attended English-style boarding schools in India from the age of eight and returned to Zanzibar after secondary school. In 1964, his family fled the Zanzibar Revolution, moving to Middlesex, England. Having studied and written music for years, he formed Queen in 1970 with guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor. Mercury wrote numerous hits for Queen, including "Killer Queen", "Bohemian Rhapsody", "Somebody to Love", "We Are the Champions", "Don't Stop Me Now", and "Crazy Little Thing Called Love". His charismatic stage performances often saw him interact with the audience, as displayed at the 1985 Live Aid concert. He also led a solo career and served as a producer and guest musician for other artists.
Mercury died in 1991 at age 45 due to complications from AIDS. He confirmed the day before his death that he had contracted the disease, having been diagnosed in 1987. Mercury had continued to record with Queen following his diagnosis, and he was posthumously featured on the band’s final album, Made in Heaven (1995).
