Handsome original 1878 antique color lithographed map of Australia, printed more than 143 years ago.

  • The map depicts Australia twenty-three years before federation, divided into five British colonies:  New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Victoria, and Western Australia.

  • There is wonderful detail throughout, with hundreds of place names, including Arnhem Land, Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane, Melville, Nuyts Land, Great Barrier Reef, King George Sound, Dirk Hartog Island, Dampier Archipelago, Frome River, Bass Strait, Kangaroo Island, Coral Sea, and Perth.

  • The map also labels the route of explorers Sturt, Giles, and Forest, and it shows the route of the overland telegraph line through the Northern Territory.

  • This is an original, authentic antique map, not a reproduction or modern reprint, and it is fully guaranteed to be genuine. It was published in an American edition of the 9th Encyclopædia Britannica, 1878.

  • The image area measures 17.2 x 22.3 cm [6¾" x 8¼"], and the cartography is by W. & A.K. Johnston.

  • Condition:  This map is in excellent condition, bright and clean, with a vertical center fold, as issued, and no rips, tears, or writing. It is blank on the back, with no printing on the reverse side. Please see the scans and feel free to ask any questions.
