Photograph Notes: Now the Labour History Museum. Opened 1907 with steam pumping sets raising high pressure water to distribute to consumers to work machinery. This system predates electricity as a means of distributing energy to consumers from a central station. Popular in dock estates but several cities had municipal schemes (eg - London Liverpool Manchester Glasgow Birmingham and Hull). The power could be used for all sorts - winches lifts revolving stages theatre curtains organ blowers fire hydrants (Greathead hydraulic ejector) and even an hydraulic vacuum cleaner (another ejector device). Station closed 1972 and the electrified remains of one pumping set is in the Greater Manchester Museum of Science and Industry.
