HOT TIP READ THIS = When you use it the first time, please use scraper to scrape off some black protective oxide layer of the magnesium surface. The more scraped off the better the flint will be exposed and better it will work. Put the rod at 45 degree to the ground and the scraper blade vertical to the surface, quickly scraping(striking) the ferro/magnesium rod until sparks drop down towards the ground. Use the sparks to light your tinder. Best tinder to get started is a ball of cotton wool. (Thats why you find tampons inside survival kits to use as tinder) You will find as the outer oxide layer comes off the flint will produce more sparks than when first used. Practice with different tinder material and you will soon improve your technic. There are many videos on YOUTUBE on HOW TO USE A FLINT STEEL or FERRO ROD should you need more info.
This is very much an emergency/starter flint steel often found in survival kits.
