On verso: "Portrait of a young woman standing at house wall".
This dramatic painting is a part of a large cycle executed in 1938 by Italian artist Clemente Tafuri. He dedicated this cycle to the history of the Corps of Carabinieri during the Mussolini era (1922-1945; see one more work of this cycle in our possession #25759).
The Carabinieri is a shorter and more common name for Arma dei Carabinieri. Historically, a Carabiniero was a cavalry soldier armed with carabine. Their motto is "Nei Secoli Fedeli" ("Faithful for Centuries"). Since their foundation by King Vittorio Emmanuele I of Sardinia Carabinieri fought in every conflict Italy was involved in, having suffered heavy losses and been awarded many decorations for their bravery.
Tthis painting showis a scene of Carabinieri's heroic fight in one of battles of the Second Ethiopian War of 1935/37.
The author of this painting and of the whole "Mussolini's Carabinieri"-Cycle Clemente Tafuri (1903 Salerno - 1971 Genova-Pegli) was the greatest chronicler of the Carabinieri. Among his countless rewards two can be mentioned, which he received from his military friends: in 1951 - Medaglia d'oro artistico dell'Arma dei Carabinieri (Comando di Salerno)" and in 1953 - "Targa d'argento del Comando Generale Carabinieri di Roma".
The artist studied at Accademia di Belle Arti in Naples. Already in 1924 he received his first official commission. Further public commissions, academic awards, etc. followed. The portrait of Prince of Savoy was one of the most significant commissions.
Already at young age Tafuri was considered one of the major Italian figure painters working in traditions of "Ottocento" (19th century).
Our images show several works of this artist offered in the last years at art auction market.
