History :

Rosenthal is a German manufacturer of porcelain and household items. The company was founded in 1879, in 2009 the company was sold to the Italian group Sambonet Paderno Industrie .

Rosenthal was founded in 1879 as a family business. Founder Philipp Rosenthal moved his porcelain painting workshop from Werl (North Rhine-Westphalia) to Erkershreit (Selb, Bavaria). In 1897, Philip Rosenthal founded the Bauer, Rosenthal & Co. in Krona and Philipp Rosenthal & Co. AG. In 1908, Rosenthal bought the Thomas porcelain factory in Marktredwitz, as well as the porcelain company Zeidler & Co .

In 1921, the company became a shareholder in the porcelain producer Krister Porzellan-Manufaktur (KPM) in Walbrzych (Silesia), and since 1936 the company was wholly owned by the Rosenthal Group. In 1945, the plant was closed, but the brand was revived in 1951 and was used until 1971.

during the period of National Socialism, Philip Rosenthal, due to his Jewish origin, had to leave the enterprise in 1934. The Board of Directors and the Supervisory Board were opposed to Rosenthal and took various measures to prevent Philip Rosenthal from exercising his voting rights in order to change the composition of the Board and the Supervisory Board. the Nazi party was asked to support and sell voting shares to individuals who were opposed to Rosenthal. However, the Nazi regime did not directly confront Philip Rosenthal so as not to jeopardize the company's international activities. the death of Philip Rosenthal in 1937 paved the way for the company's heirs and the anti-Semitic executive committee.

In 1936, Rosenthal bought porcelain factories in Waldershof and Thomas in Weidenberg. In 1939, the Rosenthal Isolatoren GmbH (RIG) insulator company was founded with branches in Selb and Hennigsdorf near Berlin. in 1939, the company was called Rosenthal Porzellan AG. On March 27, 1941, the Decree on Companies and Commercial Enterprises was adopted (Verordnung über Firmen von entjudeten Gewerbebetrieben (RGBl I 1941, S. 177), which forced them to refuse to cooperate with Jewish managers andordered liquidation of Jewish enterprises, including Rosenthal.Aryans who were present on the board of directors of the company addressed directly to the propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels with a request to keep the company and received permission to use the previous name.

in 1950, the company was headed by the son of the founder, Philip Rosenthal, Philip Rosenthal Jr., who returned from the UK, where he left during the war. In the post-war period, the company took a leading position in the design of porcelain. In 1960, the Rosenthal Studiohaus was opened in Nuremberg. In 1972, the Rosenthal Einrichtung furniture factory opened.
