Photograph Notes: This concrete water tower on the Bedford Technology Park has a unique bit of history as it is standing 810 feet from its original build position. Built between 1935 and 1936 and standing 80 feet high and weighing 2000 tons it supplied Bedfordshire villages with water. For some reason in 1951/52 possibly to do with the cold war and aircraft research at nearby Thurleigh Airfield it was decided that a wind tunnel was required to be built in exactly the spot where the water tower stood. Initially the plan was to demolish the tower and build a new one but someone suggested it could be moved as a complete unit for half the cost of rebuilding.
