This is an original engraved illustration originally included in Volume II of Bernard Forest de Belidor's monumental engineering treatise on the science and engineering of hydraulics (L'architecture hydraulique, ou l'art de conduire, d'élever et de ménager les eaux pour les différents besoins de la vie) published over the years 1737 to 1753.

The plate shows an aqueduct for conveying the flow of a stream underneath the engineered channel of the Languedoc Canal, or Le Canal du Midi, that allowed commercial transportation to move by barge from the Mediterranean to the North Atlantic.  The Canal du midi was one of the engineering marvels of the late 17th century.

This plate is from the from the first edition, second part of volume II, from 1753.
