This a beautiful and extremely RARE Antique California Plein Air Abstract Impressionist Oil Painting on artists board, by the enigmatic and highly talented early Modernist painter Emma Lou Breitag (1899 - ?) This work depicts a coastal Southern California seascape in Ventura, California. This work is unsigned, but a label on the verso reads: “Original Oil Painting. Scene: Ventura, Calif. 1929. Artist: E.L. Breitag. Additionally on the verso, this is work is signed in graphite: “Louis(?) Schwartz from Emma Lou Breitag Simpson.” Approximately 7 1/2 x 10 1/4 inches (including frame.) Actual artwork is approximately 6 x 9 inches. Works by this artist are incredibly rare, and only two other such paintings by this artist are known to currently exist. Her abstract and Fauve landscape / seascape paintings were well ahead of her time, and considering she is a Missouri painter who depicted a California seascape, this work is exceptionally important and unique.  If you like what you see, I encourage you to make an Offer.
