Bromelain is a protein-digesting (proteolytic) enzyme complex found in the fruit and, in higher concentrations, in the stem of the pineapple (Ananas comosus). It is able to hydrolyze or break down a wide variety of protein types in a range of both acid and alkaline environments. Pineapple has been used for centuries in Central and South America to treat indigestion and reduce inflammation. Bromelain, which is derived from the stem and juice of the pineapple, was first isolated from the pineapple plant in the late 1800s. Bromelain can be used to treat a number of conditions. But it is particularly effective in reducing inflammation from infection and injuries.

What Does Bromelain Do?

Put simply, bromelain breaks down protein. This has fairly obvious benefits when you consider that many of the foods you eat contain high amounts of protein and they have been thoroughly cooked, destroying most of the naturally occurring enzymes. As a proteolytic enzyme it assists the body’s own digestive mechanisms in reducing very large, complex protein molecules into smaller peptide units or individual amino acids.

These smaller components are crucial for your own production of muscle, neurotransmitters, and other protein-based molecules that your body produces. The standard dose for bromelain depends on the goal of supplementation. If the goal is to aid digestion, the standard dose is between 200 – 2,000mg, taken with a meal.

If the goal of supplementation is not digestion related, does range from 200 - 800mg.

Bromelain is typically taken between meals to avoid potential degradation in the stomach. The large range for the standard dose is due to the variations in the enzymatic potential of bromelain, which is standardized by milk clotting units (MCU), or gelatin dissolving units (GDU).

Bromelain Supplements and Diet

There are 3 primary ways to incorporate bromelain in your natural health regimen:

1.   Eating the fiber-rich core of a juicy, ripe pineapple is the best way to consume natural sources of bromelain. Keep in mind that the riper the fruit is, the softer the core will be. So, make sure you keep it out on your counter an extra day or two to make sure that you’re not gnawing on a tough stem! Note that the flesh of a pineapple is also good for you, but doesn’t have the high bromelain content like the core does.

2.   Juicing the core of the pineapple or throwing it into a smoothie along with other vegetables like cucumber.  Drinking fresh pineapple juice has been shown to be a powerful remedy against inflammatory diseases. I recommend drinking 4 ounces a day to help prevent digestive issues and up to 8 ounces to treat illnesses like ulcerative colitis, inflammatory bowel disease or constipation.

3.   Taking a natural bromelain supplement or proteolytic enzyme supplement with bromelain can also be quite effective if you’re targeting some specific inflammatory or chronic disease. If you are trying to improve digestion you will take it with meals but for all other health conditions you will take it on an empty stomach.
