Ludwig Mies van der Rohe is perhaps the most important name in the history of architecture. Working with his father – a stonemason – he gained experience of the tactile and intimate relation between material and structure. He furthered his career under Peter Behrens, surrounded by other great talents of the age such as Le Corbusier and Walter Gropius designing the Friedrichstraße Skyscraper and Villa Tugendhat in the Czech Republic. His career culminated in being appointed the third and final director of the Bauhaus.

Rohe was a devout modernist, a philosophy expressed as ‘less is more’. Translating this into furniture, he created the famous S533 R and Barcelona chairs. This Brno tubular chair in red leather upholstery is an excellent example of Rohe’s approach. A singular tubular steel frame, acts both as cantilevered legs, arm rests and back support. It is exceptionally comfortable and makes a great office chair. Excellent original condition, with minimal wear consistent with age and use. Underside bears Knoll logo.
