It is also known as silver leaf agate. Agate is named after the Achates River in Sicily, which has historically been a major source of the stone. It was found and used in Egypt and in stone age in France before 3000 BC. Agates are a form of Chalcedony, usually formed in fine multi layers around a small central crystal or foreign particle. The banding of an agate is seldom straight, but folds randomly, and can occur in many colors, depending on the trace elements in the stone. Metaphysical : thought to promote happiness, emotional tranquility, good manners, intelligence, good health and to have curative powers. Peasants tied agates to their waists because they believed it brought a plentiful harvest. Persians used agate to ward off lightning and storms.
