Photograph Notes: Moor Street station has a complicated history that reflects the fortunes of Birmingham's suburban railway network over the years. It was originally opened by the Great Western Railway in 1909 - although the buildings date from 1914 - to relieve Snow Hill and provide a terminus for the growing south Birmingham suburban services towards Stratford on Avon and Leamington Spa. When main line services to Snow Hill were diverted to New Street in 1967 (and the southern approach to that station closed completely) Moor Street continued in its old role albeit almost forgotten marooned on the inner ring road system the wrong side of the gradually deteriorating Bull Ring shopping centre. The end might have come in 1987 when Snow Hill was reopened as part of a scheme to completely recast services over the former GWR lines around Birmingham but in fact a new Moor Street station was opened with platforms on the line into Snow Hill. This left the old buildings without a role and they were left derelict for a number of years until the decision was taken to renovate them in 2002 restoring the station to the glory of its heyday in the 1930s. The longer-term plan is to reconnect the old terminal platforms as a way once again of relieving Snow Hill and providing the opportunity to develop a number of new services.
